As a former school teacher and school principal for 30 years, I recognize the many challenges teachers face and would like to support teachers in any way I can. Below is a list of resources teachers can use when teaching their students about the federal government, as well as several services offered by my office.

FirstGov.gov, the official U.S. gateway to all government information, is the catalyst for a growing electronic government, and contains extensive materials on all aspects of US government. They also provide an excellent Reference Center.

Library of Congress – Educational Resources

The Library of Congress is continuing to improve its Educational Resources program for congressional offices.  These resources are designed for teachers and students in our district, potentially available through our website.  Attached is the manual which gives a general overview of the program, including instructions on how to start posting material online.

The Library of Congress can also give our office a presentation on their educational resources, as well as schedule videoconferencing in order to directly work with educators and teach them how to effectively use the Library’s resources.

Among some of the highlights of the program are:

• American Memory - the digitizing of primary documents, with some documents dated back to pre-civil war era, including music, maps, photos, recorded oral histories.  Also available is primary sources listed by state.
• America’s Library – games and interactive stories designed for younger students
• World Digital Library – launched in April 2009 in collaboration with national libraries around the world.  Currently in affiliation with 49 partners and growing
• Tools for Teachers – teacher created lesson plans, classroom projects and activities, interactive learning activities
• Professional Development for Teachers
