Engineer, conduct environmental review, land acquisition, and reconstruction of Central Avenue, Lake Station, IN

Amount Requested: $2,122,000
The funding will be used by the City of Lake Station to complete preliminary engineering, design engineering, environmental documentation, land acquisition, and permitting for the reconstruction of Central Avenue.  Central Avenue is functionally classified as an Urban Minor Arterial and serves as an integral urban connector through the center of the city.  Currently, the proposed project is approximately 3.2 miles in length, beginning at Interstate 80/94 and continuing to County Line Road.  The reconstruction of Central Avenue will dramatically improve safety within this significant corridor and will provide the necessary catalyst for continued growth and redevelopment.  The project will benefit both the local community and the sub-regional community by improving both water quality and air quality.  Proposed water quality improvements will adequately collect and store stormwater runoff, better control the stormwater discharge rate into Deep River and Burns Ditch, and employ best management practices to reduce or eliminate contaminants entering Deep River, Burns Ditch, and Lake Michigan.  Proposed intersection and alignment improvements as well as modified lane configurations will reduce congestion and vehicular idling, improving air quality for both Lake Station and Northwest Indiana.
Recipient Address: City of Lake Station, 3705 Fairview, Lake Station, IN 46405
