Visit Washington, DC

Washington, DC is home to some of our nation’s most important landmarks, museums and other sites. My office is happy to assist New Mexicans who are planning a trip. If you would like to visit the White House, U.S. Capitol or Pentagon, please click “Schedule a Tour” and a member of my staff will work to accommodate your request. White House

Tours: Self-guided tours of the historic East Wing
Times: Tuesday to Saturday (except for federal holidays or during special events
Notes: The White House approves tour requests on a first-come, first-served basis and my office cannot offer any guarantees that your request will be approved. In order to increase your chances, please provide my staff with as much advanced notice as possible. All tour requests must be made at least six weeks in advance.

On September 4, 2009 President Obama announced that visitor access records to the White House Complex will be made publicly available 90-120 days after the date of visit. This policy includes all guests touring the White House. Please be aware that your full name and the date of your visit will be part of the publicly released records. Your date of birth, Social Security Number and all other information provided will not be released.

U.S. Capitol

Tours: Guided tours hosted through the Capitol Visitors Center
Times: Monday to Saturday, 8:50 a.m. to 3:20 p.m.
Notes: Advance reservations are required for U.S. Capitol tours and my office can provide you with Senate gallery passes. Please also indicate in your tour request form if you are interested in viewing the Senate chamber. Be sure to spend some time in the Capitol Visitors Center, open to the public Monday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Pentagon

Tours: Guided tours
Times: Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Notes: Guided tours of the Pentagon are available by reservation only. Please provide my office with at least two weeks advance notice if you plan to visit the Pentagon.

Visiting our nation’s capital is an experience that should stay with you for the rest of your life.  Washington, DC is a treasure trove of museums and monuments that tell the American story and pay tribute to the countless men and women who have played a role in shaping our history.  Here you can find a few tips that I like to pass on to New Mexicans coming out to visit.

Recommendation: The World War II Memorial

I’m proud to have served in the Congress that established the World War II Memorial as a tribute to the Greatest Generation of men and women who saved the world for democracy and freedom.  I was fortunate to spend time at the memorial with some of New Mexico’s heroes, which you can see in the video below.  For veterans and their admirers like me, this is a must-see monument to visit and reflect on their sacrifice.

Getting Around

Make sure you bring comfortable shoes because you can walk to and among many of DC’s great sites.  The city is often listed a walker’s paradise.  For longer distances, DC’s Metro system is an easy way to get around.  If you have or need a wheelchair or scooter, DC is one of the most accessible cities in the world.  You can find more information about the city's accessibility here.

When to Visit

The best time to visit Washington, DC is during the spring or fall.  The weather is mild and the lines at the sites are shorter.  Overall, temperatures are similar to New Mexico, but it can feel more extreme because of the intense humidity.  No matter when you visit, bring an umbrella— DC receives around 30 inches more rain than New Mexico each year.
