House Leaders Unveil Reform to Medicare Payments for Physicians

In conjunction with comprehensive health reform legislation, House leaders introduced a bill that would permanently reform the Medicare physician payment system. The "Medicare Physician Payment Reform Act" (H.R. 3961) will repeal a 21 percent fee reduction scheduled for January 2010 and replace the physician payment formula with a more stable system that ends the unrealistic cycle of threats of ever-larger fee cuts followed by short-term patches.

CBO Scores Confirm Deficit Neutrality of Health Reform Bill

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released estimates this evening confirming for the first time that H.R. 3200, America's Affordable Health Choices Act, is deficit neutral over the 10-year budget window - and even produces a $6 billion surplus. CBO estimated more than $550 billion in gross Medicare and Medicaid savings. More importantly, the bill includes a comprehensive array of delivery reforms to set the stage for lowering the future growth in health care costs.

Chairmen Waxman and Boucher Introduce Radio Spectrum Inventory Act

Chairmen Waxman and Boucher were joined by Ranking Members Barton and Stearns in introducing H.R. 3125, the Radio Spectrum Inventory Act. This legislation would require the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to create a detailed inventory of radio spectrum bands, as well as a centralized portal or website to make the inventory available to the public.

On June 17, the Committee on Energy and Commerce held a markup to consider "H.R. 2749, the Food Safety Enhancement Act of 2009." The legislation grants the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) the authorities and resources it needs to better oversee the safety of the nation's food supply. The legislation also increases industry's responsibility for overseeing the safety of their own products and provides FDA with new and enhanced tools to hold companies accountable when they fail.
