Fox 21 News: "Lake Co. receives money for broadband internet"

Monday, October 18, 2010

Sen. Franken is working with federal and state officials to bring broadband internet access to Two Harbors Minnesota.

“As of today more than half of this area does not have access to high speed broadband service,” said Senator Al Franken, in a press conference on Friday.

Senator Franken, along with Senator Amy Klobuchar and Congressman Jim Oberstar have been working to change that.

Now thanks to a $66.3 million dollar federal stimulus grant, all of Lake County and some parts of eastern St. Louis County will soon have broadband high-speed internet. “If your home has an electric line going into it you will get access,” says Franken.

The broadband internet will also improve educational, health and public safety services in the region, as well as foster economic development. “It's going to bring jobs to this area both immediately with 100 jobs working on the construction of this project and maintaining it,” says Klobuchar.

The broadband network will connect about 15,000 homes, more than a thousand businesses, and about 100 community facilities, something many in Lake County are looking forward to.
