Rep. Chu's Statement on Today's Supreme Court Ruling Regarding "Honest Services" Law

Rep. Judy Chu (D-CA) issued the following statement regarding today’s Supreme Court ruling that limits prosecutors' use of the "honest services" fraud law against figures like former Enron CEO Jeffrey Skilling and former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich

“Today’s Supreme Court ruling is a blow to the working men and women of America,” said Chu. “We deserve honest businesses and officials who work for the American people and not for themselves. Jeffrey Skilling inflicted billions of dollars of harm upon countless people. I’m disappointed the Supreme Court sided with one of the most corrupt corporate executives in history over the American public. I am also deeply concerned that today’s ruling could affect the prosecution of unscrupulous public officials like former Governor Rod Blagojevich. In response, I am looking at legislation to fix this gap in the law and ensure the public good, not personal gain, is always the top priority of employees and officials at every level of government.”

Congresswoman Chu’s career in politics spans 24 years. She is a member of the House Education and Labor Committee, Government Oversight Committee and Judiciary Committee, where she is working hard to ensure that public officials serve the public.  Prior to her election to Congress she served three terms as the Assemblymember representing the 49th District, where she chaired the important Assembly Appropriations Committee. A lifelong educator, Congresswoman Chu taught community college classes in Los Angeles and East Los Angeles for 20 years. She holds a Ph.D. in psychology and a B.A. in mathematics.
