Rep. Peter Welch released the following statement Thursday regarding the Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission:

“Today’s Supreme Court decision represents an enormous blow to our democracy. By a narrow majority, the Court has chosen to empower corporate interests at the expense of individuals. It has thrown open the doors to a cash-driven, pay-to-play political system, virtually assuring that the voice of the American people will be drowned out. This misguided decision poses a serious threat to ordinary citizens’ right to run their own government.”
