NEWS – CONGRESSMAN PETE STARK Pledge Against America's Health:
REPUBLICANS WOULD INCREASE THE NUMBER OF UNINSURED BY 29 MILLION WASHINGTON – The House Republican pledge unveiled last week would turn back the clock on health care progress. Rep. Pete Stark (D-CA), Chairman of the House Ways and Means Health Subcommittee, today criticized the Republican plan for increasing the number of uninsured by 29 million. "The health reform law expands coverage to nearly 95 percent of Americans," said Chairman Stark. "In contrast, the Republicans pledge to pull the rug out from under tens of millions who otherwise would not be able to attain coverage -- leaving 52 million Americans uninsured in 2019 according to CBO." The health reform law reforms the health insurance marketplace, making coverage more affordable by creating "exchanges" where insurers will compete, and providing tax credits to help working families afford coverage. According to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO), these measures and others in the health reform law will extend coverage to almost 95 percent of Americans. In comparison, the Republican "substitute" bill would increase the number of uninsured over time – to 52 million people by the end of the decade. That is 29 million more than current law projections, and even higher than the 50 million people who lacked health coverage in 2009.
