Pledge Against America's Health:
REPUBLICANS WOULD RE-OPEN THE DONUT HOLE

WASHINGTON – The House Republican pledge unveiled last week would turn back the clock on health care progress.  Rep. Pete Stark (D-CA), Chairman of the House Ways and Means Health Subcommittee, today criticized the Republican plan to re-open the donut hole:

"Republicans stuck the bill to seniors when they created the 'donut hole' in the Medicare Part D program," said Chairman Stark.  "Health reform is ending this coverage gap that makes prescription drugs unaffordable for millions of seniors each year. The Republican pledge tells seniors: we're putting you back in the donut hole."

The Medicare Part D program created a "donut hole" coverage gap.  For part of the year, the millions of seniors who fall into this gap pay their premiums but still pay full price for their prescription drugs.

Health reform closes this coverage gap.  This year, millions of seniors who hit the donut hole receive a $250 rebate to help them afford prescription drugs, and next year they will receive a 50 percent discount on brand-name drugs in the donut hole.  The donut hole is closed completely in the coming years.

The Republican pledge would repeal health reform and eliminate the provision that closes the donut hole.  The pledge does nothing to help seniors in the donut hole.
