NEWS – CONGRESSMAN PETE STARK Pledge Against America's Health:
REPUBLICANS WOULD UNDO INVESTMENT IN HEALTH IT WASHINGTON – The House Republican pledge unveiled yesterday would turn back the clock on health care progress. Rep. Pete Stark (D-CA), Chairman of the House Ways and Means Health Subcommittee, today criticized the Republican plan to repeal funding for health information technology (IT): "Even Newt Gingrich agrees that we should invest in health information technology to bring our health system into the 21st Century," said Chairman Stark. "The Republican pledge is so extreme it would repeal an investment in health IT that will save money and save lives." The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (H.R. 1) includes $19 billion in Medicare and Medicaid incentives to encourage doctors and hospitals to adopt meaningful health IT systems. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimates that this investment will reduce federal spending on health care by more than $12 billion over the next decade, and reduce private sector health spending by at least that amount. House Republicans pledge to repeal this funding: "Congress should move immediately to cancel unspent 'stimulus' funds" (page 21). # # # |
