NEWS – CONGRESSMAN PETE STARK Pledge Against America's Health:
REPUBLICANS WOULD END PROGRAM NOW HELPING BUSINESSES MAINTAIN RETIREE HEALTH BENEFITS WASHINGTON – The House Republican pledge unveiled two weeks ago would turn back the clock on health care progress. Rep. Pete Stark (D-CA), Chairman of the House Ways and Means Health Subcommittee, today criticized the Republican plan to shut down a program that is helping thousands of employers retain health coverage for early retirees. "The health reform law is now ensuring that early retirees have more security in their health insurance by helping employers who maintain this coverage," said Chairman Stark. "The Republican pledge would end this critical program, jeopardizing health coverage for early retirees at thousands of companies." In recent years, as employers have looked to cut costs, early retirees have become extremely vulnerable to losing their health benefits. At the same time, these older Americans are the least likely to find affordable coverage in the individual market. The health reform law created a program to provide financial assistance to employers to help maintain their retiree health benefits. Three thousand employers have already signed up to obtain this help, including one thousand announced yesterday (for more information, please visit here: http://go.usa.gov/alk). The Republican pledge would eliminate this program, putting health coverage for workers at these thousands of firms in jeopardy.
