Pledge Against America's Health: REPUBLICANS WOULD BALLOON THE DEFICIT
WASHINGTON - The House Republican pledge unveiled three weeks ago would turn back the clock on health care progress. Rep. Pete Stark (D-CA), Chairman of the House Ways and Means Health Subcommittee, today criticized the Republican plan to increase the deficit. "The health reform law reduces the deficit by $143 billion in the first ten years, and over a trillion dollars in the next decade," said Chairman Stark. "Reform ends taxpayer giveaways to private insurers and makes our health care system more efficient by cutting waste and fraud. The Republican pledge would cause the deficit to skyrocket." According to analyses done by the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the health reform law would reduce the deficit by $143 billion in the first decade, and over a trillion dollars in the following decade. Comparatively, CBO estimated that the Republican substitute would cause the number of uninsured to go up and reduce the deficit by only $76 billion over the next ten years. The Republican plan to repeal reform and enact their substitute would repeal $67 billion in deficit reduction in the first ten years, and possibly hundreds of billions in the following decade.
