The 2010 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree – a 67-foot Engelmann Spruce from Wyoming's Bridger-Teton National Forest – arrived at the West Front of the Capitol at 10 a.m. on Monday, November 29.
The tree will be lit by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi during a ceremony beginning at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, December 7, on the West Front Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. Architect of the Capitol Stephen T. Ayers, AIA, LEED AP, will serve as master of ceremonies.
“The Capitol Christmas Tree is often referred to as ‘the People’s Tree’ because it reflects the generosity of the state that sent it to Washington,” said Speaker Pelosi. “This year, the people of Wyoming are showcasing their great state with a magnificent tree and beautiful ornaments. May the tree light the way for a blessed Christmas and a happy holiday season.”
“Our Grounds crew always does a wonderful job decorating the tree, and the lighting ceremony is a tradition we all look forward to every year,” added Mr. Ayers.
The Capitol Christmas tree will be decorated with approximately 5,000 ornaments crafted by people from across Wyoming that reflect this year's theme, "Wyoming: Forever West."
As part of the Architect of the Capitol’s continuing commitment to save energy, for the 6th year in a row, strands of LED lights will be used to decorate the entire tree. LED lights use little electricity, have an extremely long life-span, and are environmentally friendly.
The Capitol Christmas Tree has been a tradition at the U.S. Capitol since 1964. The tree will be lit from night fall until 11 p.m. each evening through January 1, 2011. |
