Scalise Speaks with USCG Rear Admiral Landry About Status of Sunken Rig

Friday, April 23, 2010

Metairie, La. -- Congressman Steve Scalise spoke today with U.S. Coast Guard Rear Admiral Mary Landry about the status of the Deepwater Horizon, an offshore rig that sank into the Gulf of Mexico Thursday morning, and the rig’s 11 missing crew members.

“First and foremost, my thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who were injured and those who remain missing in the aftermath of this tragedy," Scalise said.  “I am confident that the Coast Guard and Minerals Management Service are doing everything in their power to investigate what caused this tragedy.”

Even though the wellhead is not completely sealed, Landry indicated that remotely operated vehicles are in the water and have not seen any oil leaking from the well.  As a result, Landry told Scalise they are working with the rig owner, Transocean, to properly seal the well and prevent a major oil spill.
