Scalise Says Summit Failed to Embrace Reform

Thursday, February 25, 2010

Washington, DC -- Congressman Steve Scalise today released the following statement on the health care summit hosted by President Obama.

“Today’s summit made it clear that the President continues to ignore the American people who want him to scrap his government takeover of health care and instead work with Republicans to address the real problems that exist without all the new taxes and mandates in his bill. We need to fix the problems that exist without breaking the things that work.

“During the summit, President Obama finally admitted that his health care proposal will raise costs on families by more than 10 percent, but defended the cost increase by saying the government plan will be better.”

Scalise has co-sponsored common-sense health care reforms like HR 3400, the Empowering Patients First Act, that address the problems that exist in health care without destroying the things that make our medical care the best in the world.

Scalise reached out to President Obama on several occasions to meet with him to review the comprehensive health care reforms he has proposed, specifically HR 3400, which has more than 50 co-sponsors including five Members of Congress who are medical doctors.
