Scalise: Tangipahoa Parish Receives Nearly $700,000 for Lake Pontchartrain Shoreline Protection

Thursday, February 18, 2010

Washington, DC -- Congressman Steve Scalise today announced that Tangipahoa Parish will receive a grant of $699,400 from the U.S. Minerals Management Service through the Coastal Impact Assistance Program (CIAP).

“Flood protection continues to be one of my top priorities,” Scalise said.  “After witnessing the devastation in the Manchac area following Hurricanes Gustav and Ike, we know how important this funding will be to help protect homes and businesses from future storm surge.”

This funding will be used for the first phase of a detached breakwater system that will protect the Lake Pontchartrain shoreline in Tangipahoa Parish.  Phase two of the protection plan calls for the construction of the breakwater system that will extend approximately 18,000 feet.

The breakwater system will limit wave heights and significantly reduce shoreline erosion on the northern shores of Lake Pontchartrain.
