Fox 9: Veterans Home Investigated for Retaliation

Sen. Al Franken weighs in

Monday, November 22, 2010

After hearing complaints about the way a veterans home in Hastings was treating its residents, Sen. Franken called for an investigation into the home. The investigation resulted in the suspension of three staffers including the administrator.

"It isn't enough to say great things at Veteran's Day," he says. "What really matters is not what we say, it's what we do."

A veterans home in Hastings is now under investigation for retaliating against its residents.
The state of Minnesota is suspending the top administrator of the veterans home and two other people.

On Friday, Sen. Al Franken weighed in.

This actually all began with complaints to Sen. Franken's office late last year.   And while the top administrator and the director of nursing are now suspended, it took nearly a year, and three separate investigations, to get at the real issue: retaliation against vets.

The story of troubles at the Hastings home broke on Veteran's Day, an irony not lost on Sen. Franken, who was one of the first to blow the whistle.
