Lithium-ion Battery Safety – Detection and Control of Impending Catastrophic Failures

Amount requested:  $1,600,000
This funding will assist the US Navy in developing new lithium-ion battery technology for its submarine fleet.  By improving the safe use of these batteries in large-scale deployments, they will be able to power a greater percentage of US submarines.  The use of these types of batteries can substantially reduce military fuel logistics requirements and improve vehicle efficiency.  Incidents of catastrophic failures in the use of these batteries in military applications have delayed the use of this technology, and this funding will aim to address this issue.
