Education Reform

Education Reform

Alaska is not alone in having to face unique challenges as it struggles to educate its children. Each state in this country has geographic, economic, or cultural barriers that prevent its schools from reaching the level of success mandated by the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB).

As a former teacher, I am committed to providing our nation’s children with the best possible education. I firmly believe in the original goals of NCLB, but I understand that a “one size fits all” approach to student achievement is not possible. Congress passed NCLB five years ago, and it is time we address the law’s shortcomings and pass meaningful reform legislation.

For this reason, I am working with the National School Boards Association to introduce new legislation that will change the current law. This legislation will improve accountability for the academic performance of children enrolled in the nation’s public schools. My bill builds on the major reforms of the existing law and offers improvements that address many of the unintended consequences of the federal legislation while holding states and school districts accountable.

Insuring our children receive a quality education is one of the most important issues facing Alaska and the United States.  I will continue to work towards improving and adapting NCLB for Alaska’s benefit so that our children receive a world class education.
