Information on the 2010 U.S. Census

Earlier this month, Census takers started going door to door across Arizona to follow up with households that either didn't mail back their Census form or didn't receive one. This includes residents who receive their mail at a post office box. If your form arrived after the mail-in deadline, you may still receive a visit, and the Census taker must still interview you.

There are just 10 questions to answer and the whole process should take less than 10 minutes to complete.

The Census Bureau expects the door-to-door operation to run through mid-July.

If a 2010 Census worker knocks on your door, here are some ways to verify that person is a legitimate Census taker:

  • The Census taker must have an official Department of Commerce ID badge
  • If asked, the Census taker must provide supervisor contact information and the local Census office phone number for verification
  • The Census taker will only ask questions that appear on the 2010 Census form

A real Census taker will never ask for your social security number, bank account number or credit card number, and will never ask for donations, or contact you by e-mail.

The Census Bureau requires each Census taker to undergo an FBI background check that includes both name and fingerprint checks. Census takers have been informed that they may face stiff penalties or jail time for disclosing personally identifiable information.
