Usually a tax refund is deemed undeliverable when the IRS or U.S. Postal Service does not have the taxpayer's current address. Refunds can be claimed as soon as Vermonters owed refunds update their addresses with the IRS.

Welch encourages Vermonters to visit www.welch.house.gov, where taxpayers can determine if they are owed refunds.

"I hope Vermonters who believe they are owed a refund by the IRS take a moment to visit my website. If they are owed money by the federal government, they deserve their refund," said Welch.

An estimated 162 Vermonters are owed refunds, worth a total of $75,000, according to the IRS. The average unclaimed refund check is $460.

Vermont taxpayers can receive their money as soon as they update their address with the IRS by:

Last week, Welch's office was able to identify a Vermonter owed a refund by contacting her father in Barre. She was able to use the IRS's "Where's My Refund" tool, now linked from Welch's site, to provide the IRS with a new address to receive her refund check of over $700.

Nationally, 115,478 taxpayers have unclaimed tax refund checks worth over $110 million.
