Washington, DC - Rep. Peter Welch issued the following statement in response to Jim Nicholson's resignation as the Secretary of Veterans Affairs:

"The resignation of Secretary Nicolson gives the President the opportunity to demonstrate the commitment our nation's veterans and future veterans deserve for serving this country. Our nation faces exceptional challenges in delivering quality care for our veterans. The President should appoint a new Secretary firmly committed to serving our nation's veterans, not a particular political agenda. Our men and women in uniform deserve nothing less.

"The next VA Secretary should have the commitment, experience, and capability necessary to reduce the burdensome and unacceptable backlogs veterans are experiencing today. He or she should assure soldiers returning from our current international conflicts have the care and treatment they need, including a seamless transition from combat into the VA system. And the Secretary should invest in facilities, technology, and personnel for improving the long-term delivery of quality care."
