Washington, Oct 1 -

Congressman Roscoe Bartlett (R-6-MD) today announced that first responders in central and western Maryland are among those statewide who will receive training to respond effectively to transportation incidents involving hazardous materials as a result of $1,499,708 in federal grants. The National Labor College in Silver Spring and the International Association of Machinists in Upper Marlboro will receive a $750,000 federal grant and a $749,708 federal grant, respectively, to enhance state and local planning, preparedness and training for emergency response to transportation incidents involving hazardous materials.

Congressman Bartlett said, “If we are going to spend federal taxpayer dollars to train first responders for transportation accidents involving hazardous materials, then I want to make sure as many of these dollars as possible are spent in here in Maryland’s Sixth District. Cumberland is a major rail hub for transportation and there are interstate natural gas pipelines throughout central and western Maryland. The recent pipeline explosion in California reminds us that there is a great need for our local first responders to be prepared and equipped to limit damage and protect themselves and other people in the event of accidents involving hazardous materials.”

This grant is from the Department of Transportation (DOT) through the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Administration.
