Washington, D.C. -  Earlier this week a federal judge issued an injunction blocking the Obama Administration’s executive order that allowed the federal funding of human embryonic stem cell research.  Congressman David Price (D-NC) issued the following statement calling for a legislative fix to end the controversy:

“Stem cell research holds great promise for medical breakthroughs that could help treat and cure devastating diseases such as cancer, Parkinson's, and diabetes.  This news is a setback for researchers, physicians, and most importantly for patients and their loved ones, but that setback should not be permanent.

“In an area like ours, the home of the Research Triangle Park and world class medical research institutions, we know firsthand both the therapeutic promise of medical innovation and its ability to be an engine of economic growth.  I call on Congress to act quickly to resolve the current controversy with clarifying legislation that will give our scientists the tools they need to heal patients with incurable diseases and keep our nation competitive in the global medical marketplace.”
