Slaughter Announces $387,000 in Grants From the Institute of Library and Museum Services will Benefit Local Arts and Sciences Washington, DC - Rep. Louise M. Slaughter (D-NY-28), ranking Democrat on the House Rules Committee and co-chair of the Congressional Arts Caucus, is proud to announce that three Rochester institutions have been awarded generous grants from the institute of Museum and Library Services. "These museums and libraries are vital to the cultural and artistic richness of the wider Rochester community," said Rep. Slaughter. She continued, "I believe that these generous grants are an investment in Rochester's future. They will fund important institutions that seek to educate the community, promote art and reading, and stimulate the imaginations of our youth." The George Eastman House's International Museum of Photography was awarded $129,441 to continue its Image Quarterly Project, aimed at digitizing Image, the George Eastman House's former journal of photography and film. Fifty years of artistic history will be preserved by this process, and will then be made available to the public electronically. The Rochester Museum and Science Center was awarded $107,875 to further its major initiative designed to expand its knowledge of the surrounding community in order to accomplish its mission and vision. The two-year project will build and organize a body of knowledge about the museum's audience and integrate it into the work of the institution. Finally, the Strong Museum was given $150,000 to help it carry on the work of one its premiere exhibits, Reading Adventureland. The exhibit, set to become permanent as of July, 2006, is geared towards exploring children's literature and supporting of lifelong learning. The Strong Museum is also finishing the construction of a new 40,000 square foot space which will hold new exhibits and programming related to Reading Adventureland. The institution also serves as a dynamic compliment of the museum's Grada Hopeman Gelser Library, a leading branch of the Rochester/Monroe Country Library System and one of only a few museum-based public library branches in the United States. |
