Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station to Remain Open, Rep. Slaughter Announces BRAC Commission Reverses Pentagon Decision, Removes Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station (NFARS) from List of Closures
Washington - Rep. Louise M. Slaughter (D-Fairport), Ranking Member of the Committee on Rules, issued a statement today concerning the BRAC Commission's decision to keep NFARS open.
"The Commission's decision today represents a victory for our local community as well as our national security," Rep. Slaughter said. She added, "Although I am deeply disappointed that we were unable to convince the Commission to save the 107th guard unit, the Niagara Reserve Station will remain open. With this compromise, our hard work and consistent efforts have finally paid off."
The announcement was made on _________ by BRAC Commissioner Jim Bilbray, whom Rep. Slaughter has been in close contact with regarding the status of NFARS during the BRAC process.
"I'm relieved at this news," Rep. Slaughter continued. "All along, we have said that the ultimate goal during this arduous process was to keep our base open and operational. We've succeeded in that," she said.
Slaughter added, "This decision did more than just provide increased physical security for the people of our country. It also provided economic security for thousands of families in our region who depend on the base for their livelihoods."
