Congressman Brown's Statement on H.R. 1591, The Democrat 'Cut and Run' Plan for Iraq

Washington, Mar 23 -  Congressman Henry Brown (SC-1), today voted against the Democrat “cut and run” Iraq plan. Brown released the following statement:

“South Carolina’s First District has a high percentage of active and retired military personnel that are directly impacted by the war in Iraq, and I would like to thank them all for their service to our nation. The First District is home to the Charleston Air Force Base where C-17 aircraft are a direct link in the supply chain that assists soldiers fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is also home to Force Protection and Protected Vehicles Inc. whose vehicles are saving lives of soldiers engaged in mine and IED attacks in Iraq and Afghanistan.”

“The Democrats in Congress earlier this year issued a non-binding resolution which accomplished nothing other than demoralizing our brave soldiers fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. Today, the same Democrats in Congress sent a stronger, more negative message to our brave troops by passing a bill that will give the enemy an artificial timeline in our Global War on Terrorism. Not only does the work of the Democrats impact the morale of our troops, but it sends a message to the terrorists in the Middle East and around the world that some here in the United States do not have the stomach for the fight. Making matters worse, the Democratic Majority needed to insert a variety of pork projects that would benefit Democrat districts in exchange for their votes. I am very concerned that Speaker Nancy Pelosi feels comfortable playing politics and hamstringing our generals with funding that is needed to assist our brave men and women fighting in harms way.”

“I stand with President George W. Bush and honorable organizations such as Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and the National Taxpayers Union in demanding that a clean funding bill be brought before the House of Representatives for an up and down vote.”
