Congressman Brown Supports National Medal of Honor Day

Legislation would establish March 25th as National Medal of Honor Day

Washington, Feb 27 -  Today, Congressman Henry Brown, Jr. (R-SC) made the following statement on the passage of H. Con. Res. 47, establishing March 25th as National Medal of Honor Day.

“A National Medal of Honor Day is an opportunity for us as a nation to honor those who went above and beyond the call of duty to defend our country,” said Brown. “These heroes truly represent the best of America. One of the best-kept secrets in the first district of South Carolina is The Congressional Medal of Honor Museum in Charleston. This museum honors our country’s finest, and I am proud that it calls the 1st District home.”

The Medal of Honor is the highest distinction that can be bestowed upon a member of the Armed Forces. It is awarded by the President, in the name of Congress, to members of the Armed Forces who have distinguished themselves with courage and gallantry above and beyond the call of duty. The date of March 25th was chosen since it coincides with the first awarding of the Medal on March 25, 1863. Since the Civil War, 3,444 medals have been awarded, and 112 recipients are still living.
