House Passes Measure Supporting 'Hire a Veteran' Week

Washington, Jan 31 - Representative Henry E. Brown, Jr. (R-SC) joined with a majority of his House colleagues today in passing legislation calling on the President to establish a national “Hire A Veteran” week to urge all employers to hire more of America’s veterans. The passage of this resolution, which was also introduced by Representative Brown and Representative Rush Holt (D-NJ) in the 109th Congress, represents a multi-year effort by Representative Brown to highlight the contributions of our nation’s veterans.

Congressman Brown took to the floor of the House to encourage his colleagues to support the measure, H. Con. Res. 5. “Leadership. Teamwork. Integrity. These are all skills and qualities that employers today are looking for in order to compete in today’s fast-paced and complex business environment. Thankfully, these are all attributes our nation’s veterans bring to the table,” Brown said. “Their training in our nation’s military and experience working under pressure have provided them with skills and qualities that should put them at the top of any hiring list.”

Brown continued “Many veterans still find getting a job after they leave our military a challenge. Veterans may not understand how their military skills can translate into civilian life, and employers may not recognize the benefits of focusing on hiring veterans. This resolution highlights some of the ways we are trying to help both veterans and employers.”

Brown went on to encourage veterans and employers to visit www.HireVetsFirst.gov, a federally sponsored website designed to bring veterans and potential employers together. “Our veterans have sacrificed a great deal in order to serve our country,” said Brown. “Employers of all types should ensure they give these fine men and women due consideration as they look to fill their needs.”
