On Behalf of His Constituents
Brown Votes No on Democrats' Health Care Takeover
and Yes on Amendment that Protects the Sanctity of Life

WASHINGTON-After the passage of H.R. 3962, the Democrat’s 1.3 trillion dollar government takeover of health care, Congressman Henry E. Brown, Jr. (R-SC) made the following remarks:

“I am very disappointed in tonight’s passage of the Democrats’ healthcare bill, H.R. 3962 and troubled by what the passage of this bill means for the future of our nation’s health care.

In August, the American people made it clear that they did not support a bill that would increase their healthcare costs, tax their small businesses, and kill more jobs; however, the Democrats continued to turn a deaf ear towards the American people and instead continued their march towards a costly government takeover of our healthcare system to the House Floor without any attempt to compromise.

Time and time again, Republicans have offered common-sense solutions for healthcare reform by creating a plan that the Congressional Budget Office said would lower the federal budget deficits by $68 billion over the next ten years and reduce healthcare premiums by up to 10 percent. Republicans have repeatedly offered to work towards a responsible bipartisan healthcare solution that would lower costs and offer greater access to affordable health care but, unfortunately, after tonight’s events it is clear the Democrats had their own agenda. As a telling example, more than two hundred amendments were proposed to the bill, but the Majority only allowed two of these amendments to be offered.

Tonight, I along with all my fellow Republicans stood in solidarity and voted NO against the Democrats’ healthcare bill. I was also proud to vote yes on the critical Stupak-Pitts Amendment that would ensure that abortions are not funded by taxpayer dollars.

I will continue to fight against the Democrats’ healthcare plan and will do my best to give all my constituents the responsible healthcare reform they urgently need.”
