MOVING WALL Arrives in Lowcountry

Local Vietnam Veterans to be Recognized at Saturday Ceremony

CHARLESTON, SC – The Moving Wall, a replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, has arrived in the Lowcountry.  Area Vietnam Era veterans will be honored this Saturday at a ceremony to coincide with the wall’s visit.  The scheduling of the Moving Wall and the recognition ceremony has been organized by Congressman Henry E. Brown, Jr. (R-SC) with the support of area veterans’ service organization (VSOs).  Explaining the significance of these events, Brown said,

“In meeting many veterans who have made the trip from South Carolina to Washington, I have been heartened as they tell me how important their visit has been.  Many of them also remark how they wish all veterans could have this opportunity.  Bringing the Moving Wall to the First District and organizing this recognition ceremony is a way for the community to tell these veterans that their service and sacrifice have not been forgotten.”

The Moving Wall is located at the North Charleston Coliseum in Parking Lot B and is on display through October 20, 2008.  Veterans, their family members and the general public can come and honor our veterans 24 hours a day during the Moving Wall's visit.  This is a rare opportunity for veterans and their families, desiring to honor the service and sacrifice of friends and loved ones, who may not be able to make a trip to Washington to experience the ‘connection’ of having visited the Wall.

On Saturday October 18th starting at 10:30 a.m. Congressman Brown will be hosting a special ceremony in the Charleston Area Convention Center Exhibition Hall , adjacent to the Coliseum and Performing Arts Center, to recognize all of our Vietnam Era veterans who served in any branch of service during this time.

The First District Representative is also reaching out to the families of those who lost their lives in service to our country during the Vietnam Era so that we may honor their sacrifice, and the families of those Vietnam Era veterans who have passed away since the Vietnam War.  Veterans and their families will be recognized throughout the Moving Wall's visit and will also receive a special Certificate of Congressional Recognition.

If you are a Vietnam Era veteran living in the First District, someone with a VSO who works with these veterans or the family member of a living or deceased Vietnam Era veteran, contact Congressman Brown’s office to provide some basic information about their service so that they can be appropriately honored during the Moving Wall's visit to the First District.  Interested parties may also register to participate in the event when visiting the Moving Wall.  For Saturday’s event, doors will open at 9:30a.m., and the normal parking fees are being waived for this special event.  For additional information about the Moving Wall, contact Brown’s Charleston Office at 843-747-4175 or toll-free at 888-868-0737 or visit his website at http://brown.house.gov/veteransevent to submit your information on-line.
