WASHINGTON- Congressman Henry E. Brown, Jr. (R-SC) made the following statement in recognition of Columbus Day and to honor the Italian American residents of the First District:
“As I represent an area that has many close ties to Italy, I am proud to take this time to commemorate the anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas on October 12, 1492.
Charleston is proud to be home to the Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston, an arts festival and American counterpart of the Festival of Two Worlds held annually in Spoleto, Italy. Additionally, North Charleston enjoys the presence of Alenia North America, a subsidiary of Italy's Alenia Aeronautica and the joint partner of Boeing, responsible for assembling the new 787 Dreamliner.
Italy is a major political and commercial ally of the First District and the United States as a whole and I feel privileged to recognize their people and the influences that they have had on shaping our nation.”
