WASHINGTON - Congressman Henry E. Brown Jr. (R-SC), as the Ranking Member on the Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee on Health, along with the Republican Leadership and the other Republican Members of the Committee on Veterans’ Affairs sent a letter to President Obama today urging him to reconsider his proposal to force veterans to pay for care that the VA has a responsibility to provide to wounded warriors. After sending the letter, Congressman Brown made the following statement:
“It is with deep disappointment and concern that we send this letter to President Obama. His plan to force veterans to pay for VA treatment of wounded heroes' injuries and disabilities is illogical as there is simply no reason to bill a veteran’s personal insurance for care that the VA has a responsibility to provide.
My colleagues and I understand that access to the VA healthcare system must be improved; however, this mandate will only serve to turn our backs on, as Lincoln said during his second inaugural address, ‘him who shall have borne the battle.’
It is the moral responsibility of the VA to care for the men and women who have served in military uniform, particularly for those who have become disabled as a result of their service. My colleagues and I strongly stand against any attempt to put this responsibility in the hands private insurers and eventually, the veterans themselves, and hope that the President will agree, and not go forward with this ill-conceived plan.”
