Brown Touts Economic Benefit of Offshore Gas

WASHINGTON- According to a survey released today by the nonpartisan Southeast Energy Alliance, offshore oil and natural gas production would create 2,250 jobs in South Carolina and could lower energy costs for Upstate manufacturers. In response to the survey’s findings, Congressman Henry E. Brown, Jr. (R-SC) made the following statement:

“As a long time supporter of offshore drilling and exploration, the release of this study greatly reinforces the Republicans’ ‘all of the above’ plan that my colleagues and I view as the best way to provide enough energy for the America people in the future.

Including offshore oil and natural gas in our energy plan would enable us to utilize one of our richest and most abundant sources of fuel and would ultimately help us achieve domestic energy independence.

Additionally, as the national unemployment rate has now risen well over nine percent, the creation of more than two thousand jobs in South Carolina, a state with almost 12 % unemployment, is something that my constituents have been waiting for.

It’s time to focus on putting Americans back to work, and in the process, provide clean, American energy for the American people.”

Note: According to the Southeast Energy Alliance’s study, offshore energy production in South Carolina would create $45 billion in federal, state and local government revenues and $413 million in gross domestic product. In addition, the state could receive a $250 million annual royalty if granted a revenue-sharing program currently afforded to Gulf Coast states, the alliance said.
