Congressman Brown Announces Service Academy Workshops

September Events Set for North Charleston and Myrtle Beach

CHARLESTON – Congressman Henry E. Brown, Jr. today announced plans for two workshops to provide information for students with an interest in applying to one of the U.S. Military Academies.  Representatives of the five academies – Air Force, Naval, Military, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine – have been invited to answer questions about their institutions.

“Now that the school year is underway, I am pleased to provide these two opportunities for students who want more information about one of the U. S. Military Service Academies,” Brown said.

Targeted primarily for the class that will be entering in July, 2008, these two events have been scheduled at the two major population centers within the First Congressional District.

The first Academy Day 2007 will be held at the North Charleston City Hall Auditorium, 4900 Lacross Road, on Saturday, September 15, 2007, from 10 a.m. until 12:00 noon.

The second event is scheduled in Myrtle Beach at the Horry-Georgetown Technical College Conference and Business Center, 950 Meyers Avenue on the former Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, for Saturday, September 22, 2007, from 10 a.m. until 12:00 noon.

“I urge all interested high school seniors to attend one of these workshops and consider making an application to our nation’s military service academies,” Brown added  “The academies offer an excellent opportunity for those willing to rise to the challenges and rigors of a military education.”

The application procedure for applying to a Service Academy is a dual track process.  One must apply directly to each academy for which he/she wants to be considered.  Additionally, a nomination must be sought through one or more sources, his/her Congressman, either/both U. S. Senators and/or the U. S. Vice President.  It is strongly recommended to seek a nomination from ALL sources.  The lone exception for this process is the U. S. Coast Guard Academy.  That institution does not use the Congressional Nominations process.

In addition to an education steeped in tradition, character training, discipline and service to the United States, Brown said, “The quality of education and instruction available at these institutions is widely considered to be among the best  anywhere in the world.”
The deadline for receipt of the completed nomination application packet is October 31st.  Nominees are chosen based on personal merit, including evidence of character, leadership, academic excellence, physical aptitude and extracurricular activities.

Applicants must be 17 to 23 years old by July 1st in the year of admission, unmarried with no dependents, a U.S. citizen and legal resident of South Carolina’s First Congressional District.  Applications for admission to the U.S. Service Academies should be addressed to:
Congressman Henry E. Brown, Jr.
