WASHINGTON – Congressman Henry E. Brown, Jr. (SC) joined with an overwhelming majority of the House in support of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act. This landmark legislation would further tighten restrictions on tobacco advertising and impose new federal penalties for selling tobacco products to minors. Following the passage of the legislation, Brown issued the following statement:
“It is time for the tobacco industry to take responsibility for the influence it has over our children. By producing their products with candy-like flavors and marketing them with brightly colored advertisements, a younger audience is easily lured to nicotine, a very addictive drug. This dangerous attraction is what we are trying to prevent with this new bill. I have heard from an overwhelming number of my constituents on this issue telling me that cigarettes and tobacco products must be kept out of the hands of minors.”
In addition to harder restrictions on advertising and flavoring, the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act gives the Food and Drug Administration the power to regulate tobacco, from cigarettes to new kinds of smokeless products and to demand the reduction or elimination of cancer-causing chemicals in cigarette smoke.
In supporting the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, Congressman Brown join’s with the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, the American Lung Association, the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, the American Lung Association of South Carolina, the South Carolina Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the South Carolina Low Country Chapter of the Oncology Nursing Society, the Southern Baptist Convention and many more organizations.
