Brown Statement on the Delay of

Administration’s Six-Month Report on

GITMO Terrorist Prison

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Henry E. Brown, Jr. (R-SC) issued the following statement after the Administration delayed its six-month report, as ordered by the President’s executive order to close the Guantanamo Bay terrorist prison by January 2010:

“Closing the terrorist detention facility at Guantanamo Bay is a complex issue, and it is incumbent upon President Obama to outline a careful, detailed and smart plan to the American people. The delay of the report makes clear that the Administration still has no answers for the millions of Americans that do not support closing the Guantanamo Bay detention facility and bringing terrorists to America’s shores.

Coming from South Carolina, where the Naval Consolidated Brig in Charleston is on the list of potential sites for relocating these terrorists, I am particularly passionate about making sure that the Administration's desire to bring these enemy combatants to the soil of the United States does not come to fruition.

In considering the best interest of the communities surrounding the Naval Brig, this must not happen. We have an obligation to protect our constituents from these terrorists and that is the bottom line.

Recently, I joined many of my House Republican colleagues in support of the Keep Terrorists Out of America Act, legislation that would serve to protect Americans and ensure that these dangerous individuals will not be moved to U.S. facilities.”
