Congressman Brown Offers Assistance During DTV Transition

WASHINGTON, D.C.- Congressman Henry E. Brown Jr. (R-SC) made the following reminder to First District Residents about the upcoming Digital Television Transition that will take place Friday, June 12th, 2009:

"The DTV transition date is finally upon us. This Friday, June 12th, 2009, is the final deadline for terminating analog broadcasts.  After this day, television stations will begin broadcasting exclusively in a digital format.

Television sets connected to cable, satellite or a pay television service will not be affected and will continue to receive broadcast programming after that date.

However, First District viewers with TV sets that are not connected to a pay television service provider or do not have a built-in digital tuner will need to take action to continue receiving broadcast television signals after the transition occurs.

The federal government has been offering coupons to help defray the cost of converter boxes for those who will require this equipment. If you haven’t applied for a DTV converter box coupon, you won’t receive it before the transition (it takes 9 business days to arrive once ordered), so alternative means might be necessary.  Ask a friend or neighbor for an unexpired coupon, or consider purchasing a converter box without a coupon.

As always, my offices stand ready to help anyone who needs assistance during this transition.  Please feel free to call toll free at (888) 868-0737"

Converter box coupons are available until July 31 (or until funds run out) at www.dtv2009.gov or by calling 1-888-DTV-2009. For all other information on how the transition will effect you, the FCC has vendors across the nation to help consumers with the transition – including free in-home installations, as well as walk-in centers to provide additional assistance.

For specific information on vendors in your area, go to www.dtv.gov and to enter your zip code in the “Get Help Locally” tool.  Or call 1-888-CALLFCC (1-888-225-5322) and call center agents will assist in finding local resources.
