WASHINGTON, DC – Today Congressman Henry E. Brown, Jr. (S.C.) voted to provide funding for troops and operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Brown rejected an amendment offered that included an additional $66 billion in domestic spending and a $51.6 billion tax increase.
Following votes, Congressman Brown made the following remarks:
“I was extremely disappointed that the Democrats chose to play politics with our troops’ lives and education benefits. I am a strong supporter of our veterans and am a co-sponsor of the G.I. Bill legislation that was included in today’s bill, but I could not support using our veterans as a pawn to raise taxes on millions of hardworking American small business owners and entrepreneurs. I look forward to the opportunity to vote on clean G.I. Bill and troop funding and bills. “
Congressman Brown is a co-sponsor of the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act. This legislation would raise veterans’ education benefits to equal the most expensive public school tuition in the veteran’s state, as well as provide a book and living stipend. Brown is also a co-sponsor of H.R. 5684, the Veterans Education Improvement Act, which passed the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee unanimously, of which he is a member.
