SC Electric Cooperatives Honor Brown for 10 Years of Support

WASHINGTON - Congressman Henry E. Brown, Jr. (R-SC) joined South Carolina electric cooperatives on Capitol Hill this week to discuss energy issues facing South Carolina. During the meeting representatives from Berkeley, Horry and Santee Electric Cooperatives presented Congressman Brown with the Lineman’s Award, one of the cooperative’s highest honors, for his unwavering and constant support of the electric cooperatives throughout his ten years as the Representative of South Carolina’s First District.

“I have always been a big supporter of the electric cooperatives in the first district and throughout the state. As a locally owned and operated business they play an integral role in the community and their commitment to providing South Carolinian’s with efficient and cost-effective electricity is commendable,” said Brown.

The electric cooperatives provide 1.5 million South Carolinians with power and they continue to create innovative solutions for improving energy efficiency and reducing costs.

During yesterday’s meeting, the cooperatives asked members to support the Rural Energy Savings Program Act, an innovative plan started by the cooperatives in South Carolina. The program would allow the cooperatives to weatherize homes, and permit homeowners to pay for these cost-saving improvements through their monthly utility bill. The program would conserve energy and save consumers $280 million per year.

“I am a cosponsor of the Rural Energy Savings Program Act and I believe that the South Carolina cooperatives have created a sensible plan that can serve as a model for other states.

I will always support the cooperatives in their efforts to cut electricity cost and create jobs, and as I leave Capitol Hill, I hope that I can continue this partnership in my future career endeavors.”
