Brown Demands that National Security Come First

Washington, D.C.- As today is President Obama’s 100th day in office, Congressman Henry E. Brown Jr. (R-SC) made the following comments on the President’s national security policies:

“As one of his first orders of business, President Obama ordered the closure of the U.S. Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay.  My Republican colleagues and I view this as a hasty decision lacking the proper review of potential impacts the relocation of these terrorists may have on the citizens of the United States. We continue to urge the President and his administration not to provide funding to close GITMO and relocate these dangerous individuals to other U.S. facilities, like the Naval Consolidated Brig in Charleston, South Carolina, before a thorough evaluation of how they will be securely contained.

In addition to Obama’s rushed declaration to close Guantanamo Bay, his Administration’s misguided decision to release details of interrogation techniques has placed the brave men and women of our armed forces at considerable risk. These patriots are committed to their mission as they fight the Global War on Terror and this information will only serve to aide our enemies and incite acts of revenge at a time of heightened global threat by terrorist organizations.

These are direct threats to our national security and I stand with many of my colleagues in saying that I encourage the President to place the safety of all Americans above his own political priorities.”
