Brown Votes Against Democrats'
Government Takeover of Health Care

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Henry E. Brown, Jr. (R-SC) voted against the Democrats’ health care plan and made the following remarks:

“For the past year, my constituents in South Carolina have made it very clear that they do not want a government takeover of health care, and I stand with them, every one of my Republican colleagues and 34 of my Democrat colleagues in voting against this bad bill. Unfortunately, Democrat leaders ignored all of these groups and continued to push their own short-sighted agenda and today passed a health care bill that includes enormous tax increases, uses taxpayer dollars to fund abortion, causes millions of Americans to lose their current health care plan, and may threaten the care earned by our nation’s seniors, veterans, and military retirees," said Brown.

Today, the Health Care bill passed the House via two votes: H.R. 3590, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, passed by votes of 219 to 212, and H.R. 4872, the Reconciliation Act of 2010, passed by votes of 220 to 211.

Brown continued, “The only thing bipartisan about this bill was the opposition, and I am disappointed that the Democrats shut out Republican solutions and used dishonorable tactics to twist the arm of their own party members to gain the necessary votes to pass this legislation. Not only did Democrats disregard the hesitation of their own party and the opposition of the entire Republican Party, but they also ignored the concerns of the American people. I will continue to do what I was elected to do and represent my constituents by urging Congress to scrap this health care plan.”
