In this week's Web video, Boehner discusses his hope that an upcoming meeting on December 1 with Republican congressional leaders and newly elected governors will serve as the beginning of a collaborative effort to put an end to out-of-control government spending and help small businesses get back to creating jobs.  Video and key excerpts are included below.

Boehner says:

On November 2, the American people sent a clear message to Washington demanding less spending and more jobs.   To deliver, legislators and governors in Congress and state capitols across the country are going to have to work together…

Republicans may still be outnumbered in Washington, but with the American people and reform-minded governors standing with us we can begin to build the smaller, more accountable and less costly government that the American people want.

During an interview today with Brian Thomas on Cincinnati’s 550 KRC-AM, Congressman John Boehner (R-West Chester) said that Republicans have heard the clear message Americans sent on Nov. 2, and will follow through on their demands for a smaller, more accountable and less costly government.  Boehner also discussed the need to stop all the coming tax hikes and repeal the costly new health care law that is keeping small businesses from growing and hiring.  Key excerpts are included below:

Boehner Hopes President Obama Will Join Republicans in Listening to the American People, Following Through on Demands for Less Spending, More Jobs:

“This is about fulfilling the will of the American people.  They made a big, big loud decision on November 2.  I’m just hoping that my colleagues and the President will listen to what the American people had to say on Election Day and follow through on what they’re demanding: a smaller, less costly and more accountable government.” [Audio]

Boehner Says the New Majority Will Move to Repeal ObamaCare and Start Over with Solutions to Lower Costs:

“I believe that ObamaCare will ruin the best health care delivery system in the world and I think it will bankrupt our country.  That’s why we pledged to repeal ObamaCare and replace it with common sense reforms to bring down the cost of health care, and that’s exactly what we will do.” [Audio]

Boehner Discusses the Need to Simplify Tax Law to Help Boost the Economy, Create Jobs:

“I think that you’ll see an effort next year to simplify the tax code, probably not as far as some of us would like to see us go, but as far as we can go in terms of cleaning up the code, making it understandable, and making it fairer for all Americans.“ [Audio]

In sit-down interviews with ABC’s Diane Sawyer and Fox News’ Bret Baier, Congressman John Boehner (R-West Chester) talks about Republicans’ commitment to listening to the American people and going to work on their priorities: creating jobs, cutting spending, and making Congress more accountable to the people it serves.  Specifically, Boehner told Baier that this week’s events make it clear the American people want us to “stop all the tax hikes and cut spending,” which is exactly what Republicans have proposed in the Pledge to America.  During the interview with Sawyer, Boehner recounted his experiences meeting with Tea Party activists coast-to-coast and said we ought to welcome their participation because it’s going to “reinvigorate our democracy.”  Following are videos of the interviews, along with selected excerpts:

On FOX, Boehner Says Stopping All Tax HIkes is the Will of the People:

“In our Pledge to America, we made clear that we believe that all the current tax rates should be extended for all Americans and permanently.  ... The American people spoke on election night.  It was their opportunity to send Washington a message.  And the message they sent was stop the tax hikes and stop the spending. … I am not going to compromise on my principles nor am I going to compromise the will of the American people.  To the extent that the president wants to work with us on reducing the size, scope and the intrusion of the federal government, we're willing to work with him.”

On ABC, Boehner Says Democrats are in “Denial” Over Voters’ Rejection of Their Job-Killing Policies:

“There seems to be some denial on the part of the President. … When you have the most-historic election in over 60-70 years, you would think that the other party would understand that the American people have clearly repudiated the policies that they put forward over the last two years.”

On ABC, Boehner Praises TEA Party's Contribution to Strengthening Our Democracy and Political Process:

“You know, I’ve been to my fair share of Tea Party events and over the course of the last year have been in over 100 congressional districts and talked to a lot of Tea Party activists along the way. … None of them have ever been involved in the political process before.  I think we as Americans ought to welcome that participation.  I think it’s going to reinvigorate our democracy.  And be a really good thing for the country.”

On FOX, Boehner Discusses Repealing OBAMACARE and Replacing it with Common Sense Reforms That Lower Costs, Protect Jobs:

“This health care bill will ruin the best health care system in the world and it will bankrupt our country. … And secondly, let’s not forget, this is also about jobs.  And if you look at all of the requirements on employers, you can understand why they’re not hiring new employees, because we’ve raised the cost of employment.  … And trust me, I’m going to make sure this health care bill never ever, ever is implemented.”

Flatly ignoring the will of the American people, Washington Democrats and President Obama have criticized the GOP’s Pledge to America, which calls for restoring fiscal sanity by cutting federal spending back to pre-“stimulus,” pre-bailout levels, saving $100 billion in the first year alone.   Yet the party of “yes we can,” is saying “no, we can’t” when it comes to cutting spending – something that more than 100 economists have said is necessary to create jobs and get the American economy moving again.

Spending cuts can happen.  Just look across the pond to the newly-elected British Government, which today unveiled a budget plan that would eliminate its structural deficit within four years by cutting spending back to 2008 levels.

As today’s Financial Times reported: “George Osborne on Wednesday ushered in an era of public sector austerity, outlining plans for £83bn in cuts to government spending in his long awaited comprehensive spending review.  Declaring that ‘today is the day where Britain steps back from the brink’ the chancellor revealed dramatic cuts to several key departments over the next four years.”  The New York Times reported that “the size of government departments in London would be cut by one third,” noting that “Britain’s public deficit is among the highest among developed economies.”

George Osborne, the UK's Chancellor of the Exchequer, said in a speech today that:
We are going to bring the years of ever-rising borrowing to an end.  We are going to ensure, like every solvent household in the country: that what we buy, we can afford; that the bills we incur, we have the income to meet; and that we do not saddle our children with the interest on the interest on the interest of the debts we were not ourselves prepared to pay.  Tackling this budget deficit is unavoidable.

Getting government to live within its means is necessary not just for the fiscal health of the country, but for economic growth and job creation as well, as Peter Wehner noted in Commentary yesterday:
The goal is to slash the budget deficit from over 10 percent of GDP to almost zero in five years — and in the process to (a) reduce the ‘crowding out’ effect of big government, (b) restore market confidence in government finances, and (c) encourage private business to invest and hire people, which will in turn fuel economic growth.  The cuts in public spending will probably exceed
anything either Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher or President Reagan ever attempted.

Today’s Wall Street Journal echoed that sentiment, noting in an editorial today that “a study conducted by Gavekal Research earlier this year, which compared economic growth in the U.K. to government spending over the past 40 years. The trend was clear: The bigger the bite the government takes out of the economy, the slower the average growth rate.”

Yet in Washington, Democrats continue to spend recklessly, harming job-creation.  Just this week we learned that “the Administration has projected the National Debt will soar in Mr. Obama's fourth year in office to nearly $16.5-trillion in 2012. That's more than 100 percent of the value of the nation's economy and $5.9-trillion above what it was his first day on the job,” according to CBS News.  In fact, since January 2009, Democrats have passed more than $3 trillion in new spending increases, with a 24% increase in non-defense discretionary spending.

To create jobs, Washington needs to restore fiscal sanity to Washington and stop all the tax hikes that Democrats have planned for Jan. 1, 2011.  With the Pledge to America, Republicans are listening to families and small business owners and offering a clear and positive governing agenda that addresses their highest priorities: creating jobs, cutting spending, and making government more open and accountable.

During an appearance on Hannity to discuss the Pledge to America, Congressman John Boehner (R-West Chester) talked about how Democratic leaders’ failure to stop the looming tax hikes has deepened the uncertainty facing families asking “where are the jobs?” and employers who are “scared to death.”  Boehner also highlighted Republicans’ commitment throughout the last 21 months to stand on principle and offer better solutions to address Americans’ top priorities.  In the Pledge to America, Republicans call for stopping all the tax hikes as part of a clear and positive plan to get people working again.  Following are full video and rough excerpts from Boehner’s interview:

Boehner: Americans are Still Asking "Where are the Jobs?":

“I’ve been in 100 cities in America this year.  It doesn’t make any difference – big towns, small towns, East Coast, West Coast -- the American people are outraged at what Washington is doing.  They’re tired of all the spending.  They’re tired of all the debt.  And they keep asking the question, ‘where are the jobs?’”

Boehner: Uncertainty Over Looming Tax Hikes has Employers "Scared to Death":

“I’ve got two brothers that are unemployed.  I’ve got two brother-in-laws that are unemployed.  I understand what’s going on out in America.  And I used to be a small employer.  And with all of the uncertainty that’s out there coming from this administration and this Congress and the policies they’re advocating, every employer in America is scared to death.  They’re locked down.  And until the uncertainty begins to clear you’re not going to see the economy improve.  And one of those big uncertain activities is taxes.  What are the tax rates going to be at the end of the year?”

Boehner: Republicans Advance Better Solutions to Create Jobs, Cut Spending, and Reform Congress:

“Their policies have failed.  They’ve been out there with all of their policies and they’ve failed.  The American people are still asking, ‘where are the jobs?’  Republicans have learned our lesson.  And we will make this admission.  We made our share of mistakes when we had the majority.  We’ve learned our lesson.  And if you’ve watched what we’ve done over the last 20 months, we’ve stood on principle.  We offered what we thought were better solutions and we always went out to communicate with the American people.  And if in fact we’re elected to the majority, you’re going to see us cut spending, you’re going to see us revive the economy and reform the way Congress does its job.”

With Washington Democrats costly jobs-killing agenda on the ropes, President Obama has tried to make Congressman Boehner, the point man in the fight for better solutions to boost our economy, a “bogeyman.”   But as the Cincinnati Enquirer recently outlined in a profile, these partisan attacks just don’t stack up with reality:

Belying that hob-knobbing, jet-set image, however, is that Boehner is a native of working-class Reading, one of 12 children from a Catholic family who grew up in a five-bedroom, one-bathroom home on Hill Street.

Long before he crusaded for tax cuts, he was a football player for Gerry Faust's Moeller High School Crusaders.

After a short stint in the U.S. Navy in 1969 - Boehner was discharged after less than three months because of a bad back - he worked odd jobs, including as a bartender, roofer and a janitor before attending Xavier, where he almost quit until a respected accounting professor intervened.

A former small businessman who first got involved in public service as a member of his neighborhood association, Congressman Boehner continues to fight for the values and priorities of Ohio’s Eighth Congressional District.

Last month, Congressman Boehner lead Republicans in offering “A Pledge to America.”  The Pledge offers a new way forward that hasn’t been tried in Washington: an approach focused on cutting spending instead of increasing it, and eliminating uncertainty for the private-sector innovators and entrepreneurs who create jobs.  Visit http://pledge.gop.gov to learn more about the Pledge to America and download the full .pdf version, a pocket card summary, or listen to audio of the preamble.

In this week's Web video, Congressman John Boehner (R-West Chester) urges President Obama to work in a bipartisan way to help enact “A Pledge to America,” a new governing agenda with plans to boost the economy.

Boehner says:

Earlier this week … President Obama attacked the Pledge to America, calling it ‘irresponsible.’  With all due respect to the President, what’s ‘irresponsible’ are the policies the Obama administration has pursued during the past 20 months in which the president and his party have controlled Washington.

Instead of offering empty attacks, President Obama should join us in working to enact A Pledge to America.  Together, we can help create jobs, end economic uncertainty, and make America more competitive.

With the Pledge to America, Republicans are offering a new way forward, built by listening to the people.  The pledge contains specific plans to  cut government spending immediately, rein in red tape, and repeal ObamaCare’s jobs-killing ‘1099-Mandate,’ and could be enacted today if the Democrats who run Washington will allow it.  Find out more at http://pledge.gop.gov, and if you like, become a fan on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/PledgeToAmerica.

A grassroots organization dedicated to reducing the size of government through lower taxes and less spending this week honored Congressman Boehner with its “Tax Fighter Award.”  The Greenville Daily Advocate reports:

The National Tax Limitation Committee (NTLC) has honored Congressional Representative  John A. Boehner with its 111th Congress “Tax Fighter Award.”  NTLC President Lewis K. Uhler presented the award to John A. Boehner in Washington, saying “John A. Boehner’s votes on tax and spending issues in the 111th Congress earned an ‘A’ grade and the Tax Fighter Award.

“John A. Boehner has led the battle on behalf of taxpayers to stop the passage of ObamaCare and cap-and-trade legislation, to make the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts permanent, to eliminate the death tax, to kill the Alternative Minimum Tax, to provide incentives for private savings, investment and job creation and to control the growth of federal spending.

“John A. Boehner has been a major asset to taxpayers across America during his congressional service, having earned the Tax fighter Award consistently in every session of Congress.  John A. Boehner has had the courage to challenge the orthodoxy of Washington spending and earmarks,” concluded Uhler.

As President Obama continues to push a plan that would hit small businesses and families with jobs-killing tax hikes on January 1, 2011, Boehner today continued his fight for a smaller, more accountable government as he joined House Republicans in unveiling a new governing blueprint to create jobs, end economic uncertainty and make America more competitive.

Entitled “A Pledge to America,” this plan embodies Americans’ rejection of the now-thoroughly discredited notion that we can simply tax, spend, and borrow our way to prosperity.  The new governing agenda contains a plan to permanently stop all job-killing tax hikes, cut spending and reduce the size of government – including cutting government spending to pre-‘stimulus’, pre-bailout levels, imposing a hard cap on future discretionary spending, and ending TARP once and for all.  To read the pledge, click here.

This morning, Republicans unveiled “A Pledge to America,” a new governing agenda built by listening to the American people and focused on creating jobs, cutting spending, and changing the way Congress works.  The Pledge begins with a preamble that speaks to the principles we stand for, the priorities of our nation, and the people’s right to alter the agenda of the government when it defies their will.  The document, including the preamble, can be found at http://pledge.gop.gov.

House Republicans have released a video version of the preamble:

Yesterday, the National Bureau of Economic Research declared the recession “over.”  According to the Wall Street Journal, “the end of the recession occurred in June 2009.” But with nearly 15 million people out of work and a 9.5 percent unemployment rate, Americans are left asking if this is a recovery, then “where are the jobs?

Congressman John Boehner (R-West Chester) noted earlier this year that:
The signs of life in our economy are little comfort to the millions of families and small businesses asking ‘where are the jobs?’ President Obama signed the trillion-dollar ‘stimulus’ into law last year with promises of massive job growth, not a jobless recovery.  Washington Democrats’ agenda of more spending, higher taxes, and bigger government is only making it harder to create jobs and restore confidence in our economy.

The following chart, from the Wall Street Journal’s Real Time Economics blog, shows how jobless the “recovery” has been:

http://republicanleader.house.gov/UploadedFiles/09-21-10_jobs.jpg

In fact, since the Democrats signed their nearly $1 trillion “stimulus” bill into law, 49 out of 50 states have lost jobs.  Just this morning,  the New York Times reported that “The unemployment rate rose in 27 states between July and August, the Labor Department reported Tuesday.”  As analysis David Rosenberg noted, “the recession technically ended 15 months ago; tell that to the 15 million unemployed and the 42% share of these ranks that have been looking for a job fruitlessly for at least six months.”

At the same time, companies are sitting on piles of cash, fearful to invest “because of the uncertain economic climate” that Washington Democrats have created, as the New York Times Economix blog points out.  That has resulted in companies which are “extremely reluctant to use some of that cash reservoir to start hiring again,” as the following chart, courtesy of the New York Times, makes clear:
