Statement by Chairman Bennie G. Thompson on the H1N1 Flu Outbreak

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Monday, April 27, 2009

WASHINGTON - Chairman Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) released the following statement today regarding the Influenza A/H1N1:

“The Committee on Homeland Security has been monitoring all emerging threats to the United States, including any strain of influenza that could cause an epidemic. The United States, Mexico, and other countries throughout the world have recently been impacted by outbreaks of the H1N1 Flu. The Secretary for Homeland Security as the Principal Federal Official (PFO) has demonstrated clear leadership and taken decisive action in addressing this threat to our Nation.

"We expect to see more reports of H1N1 Flu as the public health community actively searches for cases. It is hard to provide accurate numbers of individuals infected in Mexico. Officials have not yet determined the reason that the illness is more severe in Mexico. We understand that the Department of Homeland Security is working efficiently and effectively with all relevant Federal Departments and agencies, including but not limited to CDC, USDA and the State Department.

"We look forward to our continued partnership with the Department and other relevant agencies as we work to prevent a widespread catastrophic influenza pandemic from occurring."
