Risk-Based Approach Needed to Secure Commercial Trucking Sector

March 27, 2009 (WASHINGTON) – Today, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) issued a report requested by Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, on the security of the Nation’s commercial trucking sector.

The report, entitled Commercial Vehicle Security: Risk-Based Approach Needed to Secure the Commercial Vehicle Sector, demonstrates that while the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has taken steps in the right direction, more needs to be done to effectively assess risk and coordinate with federal, state, and industry stakeholders.

Chairman Thompson released the following statement with the release of the report:

“This is the third report this year indicting serious security shortcomings in all modes of the nation’s surface transportation systems.

Like rail, transit, and highway infrastructure systems, the security of the nation’s trucking industry is vital to our economy. Therefore we must do a better job of ensuring that commercial vehicle security initiatives follow a risk-based strategy. Conscientious adherence to a true, risk-based approach is critical if we are to maximize our security resources.”
