Funds to make homes more energy efficient

(Washington, DC) - Congressman Steve Rothman (D – NJ), a member of the U.S. House Appropriations Committee, announced millions of dollars in federal funding to encourage New Jerseyans to purchase energy efficient appliances. These funds will help make homes more energy efficient, while helping to support the nation’s economic recovery. The funding is provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (the Stimulus Act), through the Department of Energy’s Energy Star Program.

“Appliances consume a large amount of our electricity, so there’s enormous potential to both save energy and save money for families every month by helping them to make appliance upgrades,” said Rothman.  “New Jersey will receive over $4.3 million in funding to pay for rebates that will assist families make the transition to more efficient appliances, making purchases that will save them money, directly stimulate the economy and create jobs.”

The Department of Energy recommends that states focus their program efforts on heating and cooling equipment, appliances, and water heaters as these products offer the greatest energy savings potential.  Energy Star qualified appliance categories eligible for rebates include: central air conditioners, heat pumps (air source and geothermal), boilers, furnaces (oil and gas), room air conditioners, clothes washers, dishwashers, freezers, refrigerators, and water heaters.

Recovery Act funding for the 9th Congressional District can be tracked on Congressman Rothman’s website at http://rothman.house.gov.
