Steny Shivers, Shakes at Patient-Centered Health Care Solution
Majority Leader Turns Red at Thought of Bill Lacking Government-Takeover of American Health Care

Washington, Jul 31, 2009 - Clearly not as engaged in negotiations over his health care legislation as one would think, what with support crumbling throughout his caucus, the Majority Leader spent his afternoon yesterday concocting a remarkable “analysis” of the Republican Study Committee’s patient-centered health care solution, the Empowering Patients First Act.

No, really. He did. It’s a must read.

Truly spooked by the thought of any bill that isn’t slam packed with government from beginning to end and everywhere in between, the gentleman from Maryland created a first-rate propaganda piece filled with some truly great lines, villainizing such ideas as: allowing Americans to purchase whatever health care fits their needs, allowing patients to pool together for more competitive rates, giving Americans tax credits to make care more affordable, and making insurance companies accountable to patients rather than Washington or H.R. departments. Oh, and spending restraint rather than higher taxes. Scary stuff, right?

Forgetting that his glossy, two page analysis was issued just a couple hours after text of our 300-page bill was introduced – speed reader Steny must be – it’s become apparent that Democrats are sticking to the number one play in their health care reform playbook: mislead and censor the facts.

So we thought we’d set the record straight. Take a gander.

Now, putting the Majority Leader’s petty “analysis” aside, it’s truly encouraging that Mr. Hoyer is taking such a deep interest in the work of the Republican Study Committee. While Republicans have been systematically locked out of the room, we hope this means a new dialogue with the majority is possible. Mr. Leader, if this was an invitation to your secret meetings, consider us in. See you in September!
