Boucher Urges Ninth District Residents Who Have Not Yet Been Counted to Call Census Hotline (July 15, 2010) PDF Print

CONGRESSMAN BOUCHER ENCOURAGES NINTH DISTRICT RESIDENTS WHO HAVE NOT YET BEEN COUNTED BY CENSUS TO CALL CENSUS HOTLINE

Residents Who Did Not Receive a Form or Home Visit Should Contact 1-866-872-6868

(Washington, D.C.) – U.S. Representative Rick Boucher today urged residents who are concerned that they have not been counted by the Census to call the Census hotline at 1-866-872-6868. The hotline will remain active through the end of July.

The U.S. Census bureau mailed out Census forms to residents beginning in March and followed up with door-to-door counts which concluded July 10. Boucher said that he has heard from several constituents concerned they have not yet been counted and that he remains concerned that Southwest Virginia could experience an undercount in its actual population.

“An accurate Census count for the Ninth Congressional District will help Southwest Virginia get its fair share of federal funding for vital programs which benefit our region’s residents,” Boucher said.

The 2000 Census had a 67 percent national response rate, with an estimated undercount of more than 3 million people nationally. Such undercounting can adversely affect the representation a community receives and its share of federal program funds.

“If you believe you have not been included in the Census count and did not receive a Census form through the mail, please contact the Census hotline at 1-866-872-6868. I have been assured that the waiting time to speak with a representative on the hotline is only a few seconds. Now that the door-to-door count has concluded, the hotline is the only sure way to be counted,” Boucher concluded.
