Boucher Urges U.S. Postal Service to Restore Operations at Weber City Post Office (April 16, 2010) PDF Print

CONGRESSMAN BOUCHER URGES U.S. POSTAL SERVICE TO RESTORE SERVICE AT WEBER CITY POST OFFICE

Postal Service Terminated at Weber City Post Office in February

(Washington, D.C.) – Yesterday, U.S. Representative Rick Boucher urged that postal service be restored at the Weber City Post Office. Service had been terminated in February following the retirement of the contract service provider. Boucher sent the following letter to Mitch King, Government Relations Manager at the U.S. Postal Service:

Dear Mr. King:

I am writing concerning the termination of postal service at the Weber City Post Office effective February 15, following the retirement of the long-standing contract service provider.  I have previously been in contact with Joseph Meimann, Charleston, West Virginia District Manager, about the closure of the facility.

The Weber City Post Office houses over 120 rented boxes. It has served the residents of the community for many decades.  The current facility is within walking distance of a number of local businesses that generate large quantities of mail, and the facility is easily accessible to the general public.

Mr. Meimann and his staff have advised me that the Postal Service is reviewing its options for continuing service in Weber City.  It is my understanding that there are at least two qualified individuals who would submit bids to provide postal services in Weber City and there is readily available space; therefore, I do not believe that the Postal Service should expend unnecessary funds to study options.  The Postal Service simply needs to follow its procedure to seek a new contractor to continue the service which has been provided to the community for these many years.

I strongly urge the Postal Service to begin the process to seek a new contractor for the Weber City Post Office.  Please notify my Abingdon district office of any steps taken in this matter.

Thanking you for your time and attention to this request, I am

                                                                      Sincerely,

                                                                      Rick Boucher

                                                                      Member of Congress
