CONGRESSMAN BOUCHER ANNOUNCES $75,000 FOR EMERGENCY WATERSHED PROTECTION IN DICKENSON AND BUCHANAN COUNTIES

Federal Funds Will Address Damage from Winter Storms

(Washington, D.C.) – U.S. Representative Rick Boucher announced today that, at his urging, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, through its Natural Resources Conservation Service, is awarding $75,000 through its Emergency Watershed Protection Program to address damages from the recent winter storms.

“The severe winter storms our region recently experienced left in their wake downed trees and other debris in creeks and streams, which could cause floods damaging property. The federal funds awarded today will assist Buchanan and Dickenson Counties in removing this debris from streams, providing protection from future property damage,” Boucher said.

With the benefit of the federal funds, downed trees and other debris will be removed from creeks and streams in Buchanan and Dickenson County. Locations for debris removal will be assessed according to factors including their proximity to roads and bridges, threat to property, and restriction of water flow in the stream or creek. Several sites in the two Counties qualify for this assistance. These include Long Branch, Longs Fork, Cane Creek, Barts Lick Creek and Lick Creek in Dickenson County and Dave Branch, Elkins Branch, Six and Twentymile Creek, Belchers Fork Road, Big Branch, Little Greenbrier Creek, Greenbrier Creek and Rosin Camp Fork in Buchanan County.

I am pleased that the Natural Resources Conservation Service has awarded this allocation of federal funding to prevent future flooding damage due to debris in our region’s streams. The federal funds will help Dickenson and Buchanan Counties address damages in the wake of this winter’s powerful storms,” Boucher concluded.
